Genuine Fiction

I love connections that are stranger than fiction, and a call to action that comes out of the blue destined to result in happy surprises...

Geoff Siskind and I met as little kids on a bitterly cold cottage weekend of sledding and snowsuits when my dad happened to be dating his mum. While we weren't fated to become forever family, we reconnected more than a decade later when it turned out that he was best friends/house mates with the brother of one of my best friends and house mate, all of us living the student high life on St. Urbain in Montreal. Mischievous and magical days.

Another couple of decades later, both living in Toronto, here was an invitation to get up to some more mischief. Geoff called on me for some portraits; a delightful invitation to capture the dynamic personality, creativity and unique vision that I have always know Geoff to have in spades. Geoff, is now a prolific producer and writer for television and radio.

It's been an age since I've posted anything, but thought it a fun time to shine light on Geoff when I heard he was hosting a new podcast called 'Hackable?'.  In Geoff's words, it’s sort of like Myth Busters meets Mr Robot with Geoff in the middle of the whole thing as the human guinea pig. In the first episode he accompanies a hacker to a local café to see just how secure public wi-fi is. Watch out for funky hot spots friends.

Geoff has a natural gift for presenting fascinating life stories in a playful, surprising and poignant way. Visit his website www.genuinefiction.com to watch and listen. He'll turn the way you see things right side up...or perhaps upside down.

GEOFF'S BIO
Geoff has helped launch some of Canada's most popular reality television programs including Storage Wars Canada, Redemption Inc. with Kevin O'Leary, Canada's Worst Driver, Canada's Worst Handyman and Junk Raiders.

An Alumni of the Canadian Film Centre's Interactive Entertainment Program, Geoff directed the interactive documentary Tightrope, which has been presented by many festivals, including SXSW (Austin), IDFA (Amsterdam), and Hot Docs (Toronto).

He's produced many hours worth of radio programming and documentaries for CBC Radio, including Search Engine (for which he won the New York Festivals' International Broadcasting Award), Outfront, and The Phone Book Stories.

As well he's directed several documentary films including The Mantelpiece - a film about the bizarre migratory route of taxidermic caribou, which debuted on TVO's The View From Here and The Big Sky Documentary Festival.

KIND WORDS

"Having Marina take photos for me really had two purposes: The first was that I wanted some creative photos for my website. And the second is that I wanted to have an excuse to hang out with her again.

Not only are the images she captured well beyond anything I could have imagined, but Marina made the act of taking them so much fun. She turned a simple photo shoot into a rewarding creative and collaborative process. Simply put, Marina is awesome."

Such a lovely family. It is so fun to be able to capture these absolutely darling kids periodically as they shoot up like weeds. Also looking forward, as I post this in the heart of winter, to being able to run in the grass barefoot again!

It was a delight to meet McMaster midwifery researcher Beth Murray-Davis, PhD and to see the e-textbooks she and her colleagues have created specifically for Canadian Midwifery students and midwives title 'Pharmacology Revealed' and 'Physical Assessment of the Well Woman and Newborn'. Midwifery student Chelsea Futers (right) assisted with some of the educational videos that are a key part of the project.

Things have changed since I was at university and spent a fortune on books and lost an essay by turning off my electric typewriter before it saved ;-) It is fascinating to see how the e-textbook may well help students engage with the material in a more meaningful way.

The AOM (Association of Ontario Midwives) has been a most valued client for several years now. The Association of Ontario Midwives is the professional organization representing midwives and the practice of midwifery in the province of Ontario. Having been blessed with amazing midwifery care myself with both kids, I am particularly appreciative and passionate about the profession and its association.

I recently had the honour of shadowing The Hon. Henry N.R. Jackman  and his daughter Victoria on a tour of Tafelmusik’s Venue Revitalization of Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, who recently dedicated a 1 million dollar gift to Jeanne Lamon also present - See more at: http://www.tafelmusik.org/media-room/media-releases/releases/hon-henry-nr-jackman-dedicates-1-million-gift-jeanne-lamon#sthash.vc8nW6GY.dpuf

I grew up coming to concerts in this wonderful venue, and even played here myself as a child once, and it is very exciting to see the transformation. With my father being a lutenist, I grew up to Baroque sounds, and look forward to hearing the improved acoustics of Trinity-St. Paul's Centre at an upcoming Tafelmusik concert.
